FAQs
Massage Therapy
Muscular Therapy or Massage Therapy, is the systematized manipulation of soft tissues for the purpose of normalizing them. Practitioners use a variety of physical methods including applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, or causing movement to the body.

Therapists primarily use their hands, but may also use their forearms, elbows, or feet. The basic goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health and well-being. Touch is the core ingredient of massage therapy and also combines science and art. Practitioners learn specific techniques for massage and use their sense of touch to determine the right amount of pressure to apply to each person and locate areas of tension and other soft-tissue problems. Touch also conveys a sense of caring, an important component in the healing relationship.

Therapeutic massage can be used to promote general well-being and enhance self-esteem, while boosting the circulatory and immune systems to benefit blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion, and skin tone. It has been incorporated into many health systems, and different massage techniques have been developed and integrated into various complementary therapies.
When muscles are overworked, waste products and toxins can accumulate in the muscle, causing soreness, stiffness, and even muscle spasms. Massage improves circulation, which increases blood flow, bringing fresh oxygen to body tissues. This can assist in the elimination of waste products, speed healing after injury, and enhance recovery from disease.
On your first visit you will complete a health history and we will discuss any conditions in more detail before your treatment begins. We will always work within a client's comfort level so please communicate any concerns you have before, during or after the massage. Your privacy will always be respected and your sessions are always completely confidential. Your massage will be tailored to your specific needs using a combination of techniques to make it just right for you.
Gratuities are not expected, but are appreciated. Please note that effective September 1, 2016 we will only be able to accept gratuities in the form of cash. We will no longer be able to take credit card transactions for tips.

After your session it is recommended that the client consume plenty of water to flush out the acids and toxins that have been released during the massage session. Occasionally some clients will experience slight discomfort after the session that is similar to that felt after an intense gym workout. This is a normal result of increased circulation to the injured muscles and the resulting release of toxins and should disappear in a day or two. If needed, ice may be applied to the area in 10-15 minute segments.
Each client is unique so speak to your therapist about what schedule is right for you. Massage is effective for when you are experiencing pain, but your body constantly takes abuse so it is generally recommended that healthy clients receive bodywork every 3-4 weeks and clients with injuries should receive bodywork every 1-2 weeks.
